LOVE: AN INTENSE FEELING OF DEEP AFFECTION 214 MANDALAY ROAD, OAKLAND
This home is affectionately known as the Love Home, partially because the owner, Dessa, has a deep affection for this sun-drenched bungalow, and also because of the address, 214, which calls to mind Valentine’s Day. Incredibly inviting, comfortable, and livable, this Upper Rockridge beauty still stands proud after 91 years. Soak up the sun and enjoy the verdant views and a private backyard, known for its prolific apple trees that have satisfied many neighbors. You can recline on a chaise lounge, sip an icy drink, gaze at the hills and grab a ripe apple from a tree that conveniently drapes the porch. Stationed in the place to be, just blocks to Lake Temescal, the Claremont Country Club and Village Market.

When my family and I moved into 214 Mandalay 15 years ago, I had no idea what a gem of a neighborhood this truly is! What I love most is the quaint feeling and the fact that so many of the neighbors have lived here for years. Some have even attended Hillcrest Elementary School and have grown up in the very same home they are currently living in! It is a perfect blend of community and convenience with Village Market, Terrace Gifts & Coffee, Broadway Terrace Nursery and a gas station within walking distance. Not to mention all of the schools and easy walk to public transportation.
Our apple tree in the front yard is famous for its abundant supply of some of the most delicious apples I’ve eaten. Every year Grandma Dessa, my mother, would pick the apples and make the best applesauce and apple pies ever! I have continued to carry on the tradition with my daughter. The yield from this tiny tree is truly legendary. Many friends and family have received gifts of applesauce and neighbors have asked to help themselves.
The front bush that blooms a pretty purple flower attracts all sorts of humming birds. So many that I’ve had them fly inside the house when the windows are open which some say is a sign that an important message is on its way or can also signify good luck.
It is my hope that you will have a deep affection with this home just as I have!
t’s no wonder that Upper Rockridge is one of Oakland’s most desirable neighborhoods. It offers winding streets, sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay and impressive houses in an array of architectural styles.
Nestled between Rockridge’s Broadway, Highway 13 and the Montclair district, Upper Rockridge offers close proximity to highways, BART and some of Oakland’s finest shopping and restaurants.Much of this area burned in the Oakland Hills firestorm of 1991, which led to an overall facelift for the neighborhood. The larger wooded lots were replaced with grander homes staggering the hillside to compete for the coveted Bay Bridge and Campanile views. Most of the homes were constructed in the last two decades, but still boast the traditional architectural styles admired by Bay Area residents: slate gabled tutors, sprawling Mediterraneans and Craftsmans.
The beauty of the area is flanked by the Claremont Country Club to the northwest and Lake Temescal to the north, offering ample weekend activities within walking distance to Upper Rockridge residents. College Avenue’s restaurants and shops are a mere half-mile from most addresses. It is also home to one of Oakland’s finest K-8 elementary schools, Hillcrest, which plays an important factor in maintaining the value of Upper Rockridge's extraordinary real estate.
